REVIEW: Sucker Punch (Movie)

Sucker Punch, more like a kick to the brain.

Sucker Punch is the latest movie of the critically acclaimed director of 300 and Watchmen, Zack Snyder. Other films he directed are Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and Dawn of the Dead.

PLOT

A story about finding freedom when every chance  you have is as dark as night.

The movie revolves around the five damsels in distress in the insane asylum named: Baby Doll (Emily Browning), Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung). Although there are five of them, the main plot focuses on the newest recruit, Baby Doll.

(Spoilers. Read at your own risk.)

Baby Doll the protagonist with blonde ponytail, a victim of abuse, was accused of murder by her step-father (Gerard Plunkett) so that he can get hands on the money left by Baby Doll's mother. The step-father then leaves Baby Doll to the hands of the abusive Blue (Oscar Isaac) which forged Madam Gorski's (Carla Gugino) signature to have Baby Doll lobotomized. She then have five agonizing days to escape the insane asylum before experiencing the pain that will eventually lead to her death.

I wish I was THAT lollipop! Yum!

Before she escapes the asylum, she already escaped in her own fantasy world. Transforming the insane asylum into a whorehouse (sexy outfits included) in her mind. Every time she get herself in a trance, a new world inside her mind is created; a Japanese dojo (with giant statue-like samurais) World War 2 battlefield(complete with zombiefied soldiers and bunny shaped robot), medieval era (with otherworldly creature like orcs and dragons) and a futuristic freight train planted with bomb that rushes to a very futuristic city. That escapade of hers leads to their freedom one step at a time. Bringing along them from the fantasy world are the things they need in order to escape the asylum. They are being helped by the Wise Man (Scott Glenn).

Fight. Shoot. Kill. Survive.

PRESENTATION

The movie ain't 300 and Dawn of the Dead where there are loads of blood and gore, hell it ain't Watchmen which we all know had nudity, and also ain't Legend of The Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole because it is not intended for younger audiences. All it have is a movie with pure innocence and fun. This movie delivers stunning visuals, great soundtrack selection and ala-Matrix slow motion action scenes.
Charlie: Good morning girls - Oops wrong movie

Some actor delivers top-notch acting but unfortunately there are some that did not. Baby Doll is not that believable to think that she is the main protagonist of the movie. Actress Vanessa Hudgens delivered otherwise and some other casts like Madame Gorski and Blue.

THOUGHTS

Sucker Punch is a no-brainer movie. The plot is straightforward: plan the escape, fight the enemies, get the necessary items, survive then escape. Although straightforward, there are no dull moments. Each trance Baby Doll encounters kept me guessing what place she and her companions will be onto next and I am happy with that. Before I went inside the cinema I was sleepy, but to my surprise this movie kept my eyes wide open all the way. Maybe because of the intriguing story telling or am I waiting for them to take their clothes off on one scene? Hmm..

I like the transition of  the different "worlds", giving each scenery fresh look and feel. The CGI's are great. The explosions are top notch with a little exception of the robots in the freight train. It looks like the robots are from a video game with low graphical detail and are built with no love.

I wouldn't say that this movie is pretty bad nor that it should have been praised by the critics, but I really enjoyed it. It kept me hanging on the edge of my seat. It is one of the movies that are forgettable but will leave a little mark on your mind.

Watch it if you are into girls in their sexy outfits fighting hordes of zombie soldiers and kickass battle scenes.

Pros:
+ Great visuals
+ Song selection
+ Engaging story
+ Nice cast
+ Great acting (especially Blondie)

Cons:
- Character development
- No blood and gore

Verdict: 2.75/5 Popcorns
